Fog & Cedar update

Elaina and I finally updated the Fog&Cedar shop! The pieces are a collection of the things we've been slowing working on over the past few months, including weavings, necklaces, key rings and bags. We're hoping to keep the shop a little more updated than we have the past year, adding new pieces as we create or find them, on a semi regular basis. The photos above were taken at one of my favourite places in the city, and I love how well the location blends with our design aesthetic. Lately - Beach life

The last couple weeks have been pure bliss. The weather has been fantastic, and my days have been filled with beach walks, swims and a whole lot of catching up on things I've fallen behind on throughout the year (including finally updating our Etsy shop, but more on that later). It's the first summer since moving here that I feel like I have the time to enjoy the good weather, and am not rushing off somewhere, whether it be work or on vacation. And while I am very happily heading home next week, for a long overdue visit with friends and family, it's nice to have enjoyed some of summer here in Copenhagen as well.

These are one of my favourite easy lunches for when I'm lacking energy and inspiration. They are basically just sushi, with less rice and extra greens, but they are so good, portable and easy to assemble.  I was originally inspired by this recipe, but found that without the added bit of carbs of rice, they weren't filling enough to keep me going all day. I generally prep everything at the start of the week and then throw together a couple rolls on my way out the door in the morning. The ingredients are up to you, but I always include cucumber, avocado, mixed greens with cabbage, and for the 'meat' I love making the brown sugar mushrooms and tofu from 101cookbooks. For dipping sauce I mix a bit of soy with sesame oil, and a dash of Sriracha sauce. In terms of method, I spread a thin layer of rice, and then pile high with veggies and close the roll. I usually make two rolls for lunch, which seems to be a good portion for me.

Life lately has been busy. Not so much physically busy as just mentally busy. I've been working through an online course as well as preparing for an oral defence of a research paper, which has consumed every ounce of my energy (hence the quiet spell around here). At the end of the day, when I'm totally drained, I've been keeping my hands busy by weaving like crazy. I find it relaxing to do something so tactile after using my brain all day. I've got a quite a little stack going, and hope to put them, along with some bags I made a couple of months ago, in the Fog&Cedar shop soon. This week is all about catching up on chores, hopefully crossing a few things off my never-ending life list, and catching up with the friends I haven't seen over the past few weeks. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to a bit more regular posting around here as well, but for now I thought I'd share a few pictures of life lately.

After handing in my research paper last Monday I was in need of something creative, tactile and relatively mindless. I've seen some great woven wall-hanging inspiration around (here, here & here), and figured it would be the perfect project. 

Lately - Berlin

The first week of May I snuck in a quick two-night trip to Berlin. A friend of mine is there for University and I couldn't miss the opportunity to see her. It's always nice to go back to my old home. Each and every time I visit I remember how much I love the place. While showing my friend around we talked a lot about the physical space within the city, the abundance of parks, cafés and spätkaufs that spill out onto the street, and the water that divides it all. She mentioned something so valid, that I have not been able to put my finger on in all the time I've spent there, Berlin is truly lived in. The boundaries between public and private are blurred, and the sense of ownership mutual rather than exclusive. It makes for a city that is ever-changing, constantly living and breathing and with an energy like no other. I barely took any photos, which is characteristic of the time I've spent in Berlin, but I'm okay with that. I read it as a sign that when I'm there, I'm too busy living in the city to simply capture it.

Out with the old, in with the new. With only one week left in the dancing season I finally got around to updating my now dead Bloch Jetstreams. I ended up buying a pair of Gaynor Mindens, curious to see if they would stand the test of time a little better. I'm still on the fence about them, I like the fit on my feet, and feel supported, but still find the box more comfortable on the Jetstreams. I don't like the little padding they stick at the toe of the Mindens, and might end up yanking it out and replacing with lambswool, but I want to wait a few classes before resorting to this. Something I do like is the drawstring tie on the side. I have very high feet, and can never properly adjust the drawstring on normal shoes. I also ordered a Yumiko leotard way back in January, and received it sometime in March, but never shared that on here. I ordered this model, in charcoal grey micro fibre, with short sleeves and bust panel. Overall I really like the shape of it, the bust panel is not overly supportive, but the leo itself is a nice fit and very aesthetically pleasing. 

I'm always a bit sad this time of year, knowing that I have all of June with no classes, and sporadic classes throughout the rest of the summer, but I'm hoping to find a studio that's open a bit more than mine so I can least get to one class a week. I'm also going to try to be diligent about training at home, but know that in summer it's always a little more difficult to find time. I also know how fast progress can disintegrate and don't want to start again in September in a bad place, so hopefully that will be the summer motivation I need.

I often gripe about the lack of things here in Denmark, but this time I can actually brag about something the Danes genuinely do better, rye bread. A staple of Nordic diets, the dense bread is one of my favourite breakfast bases on the weekends. Topping it with avocado was a no-brainer, definitely one of my desert-island foods, and I happened to have some portobellos and green onions on hand as well. With a soft poached egg perched on top it was Saturday morning perfection.

A few shots from life around here lately. Now that we live only a kilometre away, I've been spending an awful lot of time down at the beach, which is very reminiscent of my life growing up on the West Coast, and a habit I'm happy to get into. In between writing a research paper and enjoying the sun, I've been a real homebody, happy to curl up and read with one of my furry friends. Lastly I managed to sneak in a trip to Louisiana Museum of Modern Art on Thursday, to catch the last few days of this exhibition. I didn't take any pictures of the exhibition itself, which I thought was very well curated, but did snap a picture at the train station on the way back.

Nothing like a long weekend amirite? After the past month of moving chaos it has been unbelievably nice to have five days to relax, and actually enjoy living in our new space. I've spent the past couple days visiting the flea market, buying plants, drinking wine spritzers in our courtyard, going for nice long walks, and baking these guys. All in all pretty decent! Hot cross buns are another one of those things filed under the can't get in Denmark category, but I've never actually bothered to make them myself. I used this Jamie Oliver's recipe, and found it relatively straightforward. They were time consuming, but otherwise simple, and I'm not generally a master bread-maker. I've been enjoying them toasted and slathered with butter and a cup of coffee in the mornings, and I even snuck a few in the freezer for the next couple weeks.

Life around here lately has been crazy. Between studying for exams, writing research projects and job applications I have been unbelievably swamped. Beyond that we also moved apartments last weekend. We bought a place in the south of the city, near the beach in February, and although we are ecstatically happy to have finally moved in, nothing is quite so exhausting as putting your entire life in boxes and carting it across town. The first couple photos are from near our old place. I will definitely miss the views, but am happy to be back in the city centre again, and won't miss the fourteen kilometre bike ride that had become my everyday. The third photo is from a station in the west of the city, I've always loved those big windows. The last picture is from our new bedroom. The cats are settling in just fine, they are a bit sceptical of the heights, and are spending plenty of time under the sofa, but I know they'll adjust soon enough. I look forward to sharing more pictures of our little place, just as soon as we get set-up, for now I'm taking the rest of the week off to relax, unpack and unwind.

I made this the other night as a simple, light dinner. Paired with a glass of rosé, it definitely felt like a spring-time meal. I made cold noodle salad a ton last summer, but it was this recipe in particular that inspired this version. I followed the meatball recipe exactly, but for the salad I made a couple of changes. Instead of keeping the veggies separate, I tossed three grated carrots, shredded savoy cabbage, half a chilli, some quartered radishes and a handful of mint with rice noodles. I then poured over the dressing and mixed well. I served with avocado and the meatballs on the side. In terms of dressing, I went a bit off on my own so I've posted my version below. 

Dressing:
1/4 c. rice vinegar
juice of 1 lime
1 cloves garlic, pressed
1/2 red finger chilli, chopped
2 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons fish sauce

Lately - Paris on film.

I was lucky enough to travel to Paris over the Christmas holidays to hang out with a friend that was visiting from Canada. I brought my Olympus OM-1, which I've shot with here, here and here. As per usual I wasn't disappointed with the results. Film really is the nicest medium, and I'm always happy when I expend the extra effort and cost of working with it. Simple spring.

The past couple weeks have really started to feel like spring. It seems to change overnight here, one day it's winter, the next the sun is out, and every single Copenhagener is outside soaking it up. I've been trying to do the same, having coffees and chats with friends outside whenever possible. I can also feel myself ready to shed winter bulk, and wear some lighter clothes again. My style stays pretty consistent, season to season, for the most part I try to rework the same items in different ways. I do tend to pack some things, like my lighter denim, during the winter months and am looking forward to getting those things out again. I also picked up a new pair of nearly brand new sneakers from the flea market on Saturday (similar to the above), and look forward to adding those into my everyday. Anybody else ready for spring?
